A Court of Appeal, sitting in Abuja has upturned the verdict of the Taraba governorship election tribunal which nullified the election of Governor Darius Ishaku, in favour of Senator Aisha Alhassanof the All Progressives Congress.
The court ruled that the method of party nomination of a candidate should not be grounds for disqualification of an election.
It was ruled that the Peoples Democratic Party primary election which produced Ishaku was a pre-election matter, and as such, the Tribunal lacked the authority to rule on it.
According to the Appeal Court, only the Independent National Electoral Commission and members of the PDP possess the grounds to complain.
The Court therefore ruled that Ishaku was the validly nominated candidate of PDP for the election, while pointing out that Alhassan and APC have no right to challenge the election in which Ishaku emerged since none of them is a member of the PDP.
